Som Tum is the most popular salad in Thailand. It is so popular that some people have included this salad to each of their meal. There are various kinds of SomTum, i.e. SomTum Thai, SomTum crab, SomTum Sou, SomTum Mou, SomTum Fruit, SomTum Corn, SomTum with Fermented Fish. When you order SomTum in Thailand, you need to specific the kind of SomTum that you like. In some case, restaurant may also ask you to specify the seasoning test that you like: salty, sweetie, sour and spicy. The way you seasoning this dish is very important because it would make each dish have its own unique test. Even when you order the same kind of SomTum, their tastes could be much different if they were seasoned differently. For this recipe, we would like to introduce SomTum Thai.


Papaya Salad

Ingredients

Substitute Ingredient(s)

  • Authentic recipe for this dish would use either Coconut Palm Sugar or
  • Toddy Palm Sugar to season this dish. However
  • it can be subtituted with other kinds of sugar if you cannot find either Coconut Palm Sugar or
  • Toddy Palm Sugar.
  • In addition
  • other kinds of tomatoes can substituted Grape Tomatoes as well.

Preparation

  1. Crush few cloves of Garlic and Chili in mortar.
  2. Take 1 tablespoon of Baked Peanut, 1/4 cup of String bean and 5-10 Grape tomatoes which is cut in half. Put them in the mortar, then lightly crush them in the mortar.
  3. Mix ingredients in mortar with 2 cup of Papaya Stripes and 1 tablespoon of Dry Shrimp.
  4. Season the mixed Papaya Stripes with Fish Sauce, Lime Juice, Tamarind Juice and Sugar. Now this dish is ready to serve!
